Week of February 6-10

Dear families,

I hope you are enjoying the snow today!

Last week we finished the inquiry onsnow and the children brought home "snow" they had made with Ms. Santiago. Science is fun!!

The sight words of the week were WE and FIND. I'm so impressed with how far the children have progressed with their reading and letter sounds!

This week we continued our fun unit on Pirates! The children drew treasure maps with lots of detail, and aged them with coffee and a paint brush😊. Next week with their Reading Buddies they will dictate/write how to find the treasure! The children also learned about compasses and drew one on their map, noting that our sight word WE is a great way to remember that it's North South West East. In our Science Centre, they learned how to make shiny Pirate Pennies with vinegar and salt, and learned that vinegar is an acid and salt is a corrosive.

We did three surveys, asking how many kids would want a parrot for a pet, if they've ever been on a boat, and if they would want to be a pirate. We made graphs and tally marks. They also completed and wrote the sentence "If I were a pirate" and drew a picture. Lastly, they wrote "I think pirates are..." and drew a picture.

This unit transitioned well into a lesson about safety with the pirate skull and cross bones symbol. They children learned not to touch things at home with danger symbols on it and we read and completed a booklet about it. They folded paper to make pirate hats and had fun counting pirate "gold."

The children had a great time at a K-3 assembly with musical performer John McKool.

Next week we'll celebrate the 100th day of school and Valentine's Day with lots of numeracy and literacy work. We'll also finish up our Pirate unit.

On February 23 it will be "Wear Pink to School Day" at LKS.

JKs receive their report card on Monday. I look forward to meeting with you next week to discuss your child's progress.
