Dear Parents,
I hope you have had a wonderful summer with your family and friends. My colleagues and I have been busy preparing our classrooms for an exciting year of Kindergarten and I am looking forward to working with your children this year. My goal as an educator is to create a happy and inviting classroom where children will learn, create friendships, improve skills and reach their individual potentials. Each child is unique and I am dedicated to working with your child to reach their full potential. We will work hard together to create an enjoyable and productive learning environment.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Children should be at school by 8:55 a.m. (morning class) and 12:30 p.m. (afternoon class) at the latest. It is important that they are in line and ready to come in for entry when the bell rings. “Oh Canada” and announcements start promptly at 9 a.m. If your children come in a little earlier they will have time to greet their friends and settle in class before the final bell rings. I appreciate your assistance in helping me establish daily routines with your children such as saying good bye to parents and getting ready for circle, lining up inside and outside the classroom, bringing notes and forms and other items to and from school, and other basic routines. Much of September is focusing on learning classroom routines. If your child if going to be absent please contact the office 4-394-7890.
Please be kind enough to keep strollers behind the fence and keep the exit door clear so that your children may exit with a clear view of their caretakers. Dismissal is at 11:20 a.m. for the morning class and 3:05 for the afternoon class.
If your child will be going home with someone other than parents or regular caregivers (grandparents, nannies, e.g.) please inform me in written form. If for any reason you are unable to pick your child up on time please contact the school office (416-394-7890).
Outdoor Play
Outdoor play is a vital component of the Kindergarten Program. Weather permitting we will play outside. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately. You can also make this a learning experience for your child by checking the weather report in the newspaper together. This routine will also help them when we discuss the calendar and weather at circle time.
Clothing and Personal Belongings
Please assist your child in learning how to manage their clothing and to dress themselves. Clothing that is easy to remove and put back on with larger style zippers and buttons will assist your child. The only item that students need to begin school is a back pack. Please ensure that the back pack is large enough to hold a library book, school work which will be sent home and perhaps a water bottle. Backpacks should be labelled with your child's
name. Provide opportunities for your child to practise opening, closing, putting materials in and taking materials out of his/her backpack. Independence is an importatn part of Kindergarten.
White TDSB Bags
Each Friday your child’s personal white TDSB bag will be sent home and must be returned on the following Monday. The bag will include some of the work your child has done (other work is ongoing and is retained for report card purposes, etc.), notes home, artwork, etc. Your child will also receive a green bag from the school library and this must be returned each week along with your child’s library book. We go to the library once a week and the computer lab once a week.
I welcome parent volunteers in the classroom for the following weekly activities:
Reading Club – assist children individually to learn to read
Mystery Reader – read a book (brought from home) to the class
Grade Parents (two) – do monthly volunteer schedule, assist with classroom events, compile parent contact list for distribution
White TDSB Bags and Snuggle Books – put schoolwork etc. in white bags
