Autumn is here

Dear parents,

Another week of school is over and the children are really settling into their classroom routines which is wonderful. Thank you for attending Curriculum Night and for signing up to volunteer in the classroom this year! Our Grade Parents (Anna's mom and Sienna's mom for the Morning Class, Isobel's mom and Lewis' mom for the Afternoon Class) are putting the volunteer names in a calendar which they will email to you and we will also post the sign up sheet at my classroom entrance. If you switch dates with another parent please let us know.

We will be having Hallowe'en and Holiday/December parties and if you would like to volunteer to bring (nut-free) treats, juice boxes, etc. please let our Grade Parents know. Our Hallowe'en Party will be on Monday, October 31st and our Holiday/December Party will be on Friday, December 23rd.

Thank you as well to the parents who signed up to do the white TDSB bags and Snuggle books. I only had one sign up sheet posted instead of two (one for a.m., one for p.m.) so I will email parents who signed up to confirm their dates and then email everyone with the dates still available. I will be sending home weekly "Snuggle Up books" starting in October. These little readers are an opportunity for you to read with your child at home. Your child will receive a new book each week (if the previous book is returned).

Our first Mystery Reader was Cameron D's mom! The kids loved the Robert Munsch story she read and it is always a treat to have a visitor in our classroom.

Thank you for your "Toonie Tuesday" contributions for the Seeds of Hope in Africa, and thank you for any and all contributions for the Terry Fox walk/run.

This week we focused on learning/reviewing the alphabet by tracing the upper case and lower case letters (JK) and by writing the alphabet from memory (SK). We are also learning/reviewing the first of Jolly Phonics sounds which is "S". The children did a great job sounding out their "home" words of "I" "in" and "is" and have three new "refridgerator" words to work on this week which are in their white TDSB bags. We are also learning/reviewing our numbers and how to write them correctly. Please remember/encourage your child to always start from the top when writing and to use pencil. Some of the children are learning how to recognize and write their name and practicing this is at home is very helpful as well.

If your child's work is stamped "Please finish for homework - Mrs. Tyndall" please have your child complete the work s/he didn't finish in class and return it on Monday. Thank you.

The children took their first library books home this week! We go to the Library once a week and the children's books and library bags are due the following week.

Autumn is here and we will be talking about the changing of the seasons while the trees' leaves turn their beautiful colours. Please bring in a pair of school shoes that your child can keep in his/her cubby all year. Crocs and slippers work really well. As the cooler weather approaches please encourage your child to independently zip and unzip his/her jacket.

We are preparing a song about Safety for our first Sharing Assembly on September 26. All the children will be receiving an award throughout the year at our monthly Sharing Assemblies and if your child will be this month's recipient I will send you a separate email so that you can attend if possible.

That's our news for this week. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Tyndall
