This week was all about -AT words like bat, cat, rat, sat, mat, fat, chat, hat, flat, spat, splat, and so on. We read them and wrote them. Ask your children about them! We also continued our inquiry on Bats, and compared them to birds. Next week we'll branch off a bit into Owls and compare and contrast them (they have more in common that with regular birds i.e. nocturnal). We learned the B-A-T-T-Y song and read the wonderful book Stellaluna about a baby bat who thinks it's a bird. We watched the Stellaluna storybook video, read "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat," labelled a bat diagram, made bat art, and read and coloured a mini bat book. We also watched a short video about a rescued baby bat. Next week we'll talk more about what bats have, can do, and are. We'll also talk more about echolocation, that bats are mammals, what it means to be nocturnal, and how bats live in colonies.
Gavin and Lucas from Grade 2 read "The Grumpy Bird" to the class.
Thanks so much to our Classroom Volunteers this week: Iris' dad was Mystery Reader, and Dima's mom helped out with our Computer Lab.
In your child's white bag are the Snuggle Book (please read them with your children!), November words and poem (please practise reading these as well), and the December Scholastic Order. Orders are due by December 1st so that the books come in nice and early before the holidays. Books make wonderful gifts!
We also cut out paper poppies and read a book about Peace and learned how to say "peace" in several languages from around the world. On Tuesday, November 11 at 10:30, the school will gather in the gym for our Remembrance Day Ceremony.
The next Sharing Assembly will be on November 21st. We will be reciting a poem called "Manners." The following children will receive awards for Empathy: Jake, Izzie and Tessa.
The Seniors will be receiving a Progress Report on Monday (Juniors receive theirs in February). Thank you for booking interview times on schoolbookings.net. I look forward to meeting with you next week regarding your child's progress.
Have a terrific weekend!
