Dear families,
Last week we finished our unit on Penguins and started an Author Study of Jan Brett. Www.janbrett.com We read The Mitten, and this week we will read The Hat, Three Snow Bears, Annie and the Wild Animals, and The First Dog. We are doing several reading, writing and counting activities about mittens. We are going to make a Jan Brett literature folder. Jan Brett is an enormously gifted illustrator of children's books and there is an opportunity to win a visit from her if you "like" her on Facebook. Fingers crossed!
We talked and wrote about winter this week. The SKs wrote about what they like and don't like about winter, and the JKs practiced matching upper and lowers case letters. We also wrote and matched winter words, and wrote rhyming -it and -at words. The JKs also practiced number formation and all the children did their January calendars.
The JKs also did a sequencing activity (a snowman melting), and the SKs completed a written activity about the compound words that have the word "snow" in them.
Our current poems/songs are The Snow Song, I Have a Cold, and Five Little Snowmen.
Our next Sharing Assembly will be this Thursday, January 30, celebrating Teamwork. I hope you can join us!
Next week we will start a unit on the Winter Olympics which promises to be fun and exciting! Go Canada go!
The week after will be the 100th Day of School (February 10) and Valentine's day. Please help your child count 100 items that fit in a zip lock bag and bring them into school by Friday, February 7. Thank you.
Thank you to Adam's dad who was Mystery Reader this week, and thank you to Lily M.'s mom and Noah P.'s mom for doing the white bags and snuggle books! Thank you as always to our Grade Parents for organizing all the parent volunteers. I would like to say a special Thank You to Melania's mom who is arranging for her friend Nel to visit our morning class and speak about her recent visit to Antartica where she saw a lot of penguins! :)

Week of January 20-24
Dear families,
We had another busy week in Room 166! The morning and afternoon classes welcomed Librarian Susan from Brentwood Library who read stories to the children and told them about how to take books from the public library.
We have almost finished our fun and educational unit on Penguins! This week the children made play-doh penguins, the JKs played bingo dabber alphabet penguins (PINGO), the SKs completed word work on the penguin life cycle, and we all watched a BBC video about the life cycle of the amazing Emperor penguins on the SmartBoard. We also practiced our poems on the SmartBoard. The SKs also did the literacy activity "Penguin Pals letter mix up." The children's homework this weekend is to complete the booklet "Penguins" with words and picture.
The JKs will be receiving their first report cards soon in early February. JKs and SKs will be receiving their final report card in June. I will contact you if there is a need for an interview. All parents are welcome to book an interview time online if they wish to do so, however. There will also be an Open House in my room on February 6 from 8:00-8:45 a.m.
Thank you to Megan's mom again for collating the Scholastic booklets. The next order is due January 31.
The 100th Day of School is February 10 and our Valentine's Party will be on February 14. Thank you in advance to the parent volunteers who will be assisting with activities and snacks. They will be fun days and I am preparing a lot of fun activities! Thank you to Mason's family for supplying Valentine plates, serviettes and table cloths.
In preparation for the 100th Day of School, I am asking each child to bring in 100 objects by February 7th. A list of suggestions will go home in this Friday's white bag. Thank you.
If your child is preparing Valentine cards/treats for his/her classmates, please ensure the treats are nut and sesame free. Writing Valentines cards is a wonderful writing and reading opportunity!
We will also be doing a lot of Olympic-themed numeracy and literacy activities.
SK children, please remember to completes your journals regularly and them hand them back. Thank you!
A very special Thank You to Lily G.'s mom for reading and donating a copy of the wonderful book Henry the Heron, which was based on a real experience and was written by Lily's grandfather and uncle. What a special book!

Week of January 13-17
Dear families,
We started our unit on penguins this week and the children about their habitat, characteristics, behaviour, and life cycle. The children are really enthusiastic about this topic and we have been doing fun literacy and numeracy activities tied to the theme; the SKs fed the paper bag penguin sight word "fish," the JKs and SKs pretended they were penguins and ate (gold) fish (crackers!) in PINGO, the JKs matched small letters to capital letters with a penguin flip book, and we all started our Penguin Folders (these will go home when we are finished our unit).
The Science Table is now a water table with various absorptive materials. The children are having fun learning about which materials absorb water more readily - different kinds of sponges, chamois, paper towels, cotton balls, and dish cloths.
This month's sharing assembly will be about teamwork. We enjoyed reading "Perfect Snow" by the wonderful author and artist Barbara Reid, and talked about how the children worked together in the story. The children also enjoyed listening to author Frieda Wishnisky in the library. Www.friedawishnisky.com
This week we will continue learning about penguins. We will also finish our snowman art.
Our Kindness Quilts are on the hallway bulletin board. Please take a moment to look at the beautiful and thoughtful work your children have done.

Happy Holidays

Week of December 16-19
Dear families,
Last week we continued with our holiday-themed activities and also worked/played at five centres: letter/letter sound bingo, magnet letter/number tracing, letter tracing, number bingo and a sight word game.
At this week's Sharing Assembly please bring a Santa or elf hat for your child. I hope to see you then!
With our Reading Buddies we practiced our Holiday words and made our mobiles. This week we sang holiday songs at the piano, did holiday addition and subtraction (SK), dot-to-dot alphabet (JK), did a fun word recognition game on the SmartBoard, and learned about the importance of being kind when we read The Kindness Quilt. We will be making a kindness quilt made of paper in the new year. Look for it on our hallway bulletin board!
On Tuesday it is Career day at LKS - dress for the career you'd like to have.
If you are volunteering for Thursday's Holiday craft party, thank you in advance for your help! I have lots of fun crafts ready to go. If you are doing white bags on Thursday, please come at the beginning of class since there will be a lot if things going home and the children will be putting their crafts in their bags as well.
