Hello families,
December is here and this is a special time for children as they look forward to Santa's visit and all the excitement of the season. The children were delighted to see the classroom decorated with Holiday decorations on December 1st. It's going to be a fun month!
The children had a wonderful time at the musical "Seussical" and a special thank you to the parent volunteers: the moms of Yoel, Cameron D., Logan, Jacob, Alex P., Ava, Dana and Sarah did a wonderful job.
This week the children made matching mittens (more challenging than it seems!), worked on their Phonics Duotangs (Set 2 for the SKs), decorated the Cat in the Hat's hat, starting learning their new poem about seasons ("Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall"), did their December calendars, and practiced their songs for the Holiday Concert.
Thank you to our other parent volunteers this week: our morning Mystery Reader was Ava's mom, Carly's mom was the morning Reading Club helper, and Anna's mom did the morning bags. Afternoon parents, be sure to sign up for volunteer opportunities in the classroom (Tuesdays for Reading Club, Thursdays for Mystery Reader and Fridays for White Bags and Snuggle Books); the children love to have their parents visit and help! Contact your grade parents Tamara and Simone to sign up.

Dear families,
The children are all very excited about seeing "Seussical" on Monday (a.m. class) and Tuesday (p.m. class). Afternoon Parents please remember to arrive early on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m.
We have been learning about measurement and watched Peep measure his pond then measured our own (plastic) turtles. We also are learning our Anchor Words -- please practice these high-frequency words with your child at home. We completed 4 different art plates, matching our four seasons and talked about what happens in the winter (birds fly south, animals hibernate, etc.)
The children did a lovely job performing their two poems "Little Poppy" and "Down, Down" at the Sharing Assembly. Congratulations to Nathalie, Lola, Kasen, Myles, and Cameron B. who received certificates for Empathy/Being a Good Friend.
The SKs have started Set Two of their phonics duotangs. Great Job! We are now learning the sounds C/K, E, H, M, R and D.
Last week the afternoon class had a surprise visit from Cinderella! Wow! Thank you so much to LKS mom Carrie!

It was a pleasure speaking with all of you last week about your child's progress. During the interviews we also spoke about a handy reference book to have at home -- the "First Dictionary." The one we use at school is published by Harcourt Brace Canada: ISDN 0774714492

Dear families,
This week we focused on Remembrance Day activities in preparation for the Assembly on Friday. The children listened very respectively during the assembly and I was very proud of their attentiveness. We completed a cutting, pasting and word tracing poppy craft, completed the sentence "I was brave when..." in writing with an accompanying drawing, practiced our two poems (see below), completed our JK and SK Number books (if they were sent home incomplete please return them after your child has completed the booklet), the SKs read and matched Autumn Words (good reading!) and the Alphabet Worm, and the JKs and SK made a Canada Goose craft; we are starting anew unit about changing seasons and what animals do when winter comes.
Our Poems this week were"Little Poppy" (to the tune of Frere Jacques) and "Down, down" (spoken aloud):
Little Poppy little poppy
Red and Black, red and black
It helps me to remember, it helps me to remember
To be a kind friend, to be a kind friend.
Down, down, down, down
The leaves are falling
In their lovely dresses
Of red and brown

While the flowers sleep,
Careful as you run along

Please practice reading these poems with your child. The children are doing a wonderful job of reading and recognizing these words, guessing which one comes next, and sounding them out. Good job!

A special Thank You to my parent volunteers who helped at our Hallowe'en Party on Monday: Anna and Liam's mom from the Morning Class, and the moms of Tatum, Logan, Chloe, Raine, and Samantha in the Afternoon Class. We made Model Magic pencil toppers, masks, decorated pumpkins, and made mummies and kites. Thank you also to the parents who brought in snacks.
Our Reading Club Helper this week was Anna from the Morning Class. I have bought several new series of the Bob books (I have series 1-5 as well as Kindergarten Sight Words and Grade One Sight Words). They are excellent. I have also bought a Curious George Phonics set which I think the children will like. With the coupons from your Scholastics Orders I have purchased four Phonics Sets: Batman, My LIttle Pony, Scooby Doo, and Froggy Phonics. Thank you for your Scholastic Orders! Please remember to read each week's Snuggle Book with your child and to return it for a new one.
Our Mystery Readers this week were Dana's dad from the morning class and Myles' mom from the afternoon class. Thank you!
If you have ordered a Berenstain Bears set from Scholastic and have not received it please let me know.
I still need clean glass baby food jars with their lids (small and large) if you have them. Thank you!
Our White Bags and Snuggle Books were done by Charlie's mom (a.m.) and myself in the afternoon.
This week we worked on our Phonics duotangs and number booklets, and as well we completed sentences and drew pictures related to our book The Grouchy Ladybug; I feel happy when.... I feel grouchy when.... The SK's writing is really coming along! Don't forget your finger spaces between the words!
The children also started reading from Picture Dictionaries. If you don't have a picture dictionary I really recommend having one at home. We use the edition published by Harcourt Brace Canada called "First Dictionary."
Next week Friday is Remembrance Day. We will be learning about this important day and creating a special poppy craft as well as doing numeracy and literacy-related tasks.
I look forward to meeting you at our Parent Teacher Interviews in a few weeks. SK children will be receiving Progress Reports on November 14, JKs will receive their first report in February, and both JKs and SKs receive a report in June. All parents are welcome to come in for an interview the week of November 14 to discuss their child's progress. Just go to schoolbookings.net to book an available interview time.

Hallowe'en is Coming!
Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe Hallowe’en is on Monday – what an exciting time of year for the children! Please remember to only bring in NUT FREE treats if you are sending them in for your child’s classmates on Monday. I have made bags for the children to sort the treats by finding their classmates’ names. Thank you so much to the parents who have volunteered to help with the party and to bring in snacks. I have fun craft activities planned for the children on this special day.
This week we completed Hallowe’en booklets for your child to read to you at home, we did Hallowe’en-themed counting activities, spelling/vocabulary activities, and colouring as well. We practiced reading/sounding out our Hallowe'en words with pictures, without pictures, and covering up all the letters except the first, then the second, the third, etc. until we sounded them out. The Seniors did before-and-after activities, completing which letter came before or after a given letter of the alphabet. They did the same for numbers. The Juniors also coloured in ghosts according to the colour word on them, drew 1-10 pumpkins seeds, and all the children cut and pasted Hallowe’en words which corresponded to pictures. They also did a sequencing activity, putting six pictures in order of the steps between a pumpkin and a jack-o-lantern. We also read fun and spooky stories about the Berenstain Bears.
Thank you to the parents who attended our second Sharing Assembly. The children did a great job reciting the poem "Autumn Leaves." Congratulations to Logan, Dana, Anna, Raine and Isobel who received a certificate for "Responsibility." Wonderful job!
This week we also completed The Grouchy Ladybug and the children completed the sentence “I liked The Grouchy Ladybug story because....” and drew an accompanying picture to their written words.
Our “fridge door words” this week are COME, LOOK and HERE. Please practice reading these at home when you open the fridge door (like “Open Sesame!”). Please also read your child's weekly Snuggle Book with your child. The more you read with your child, one day your child will read to you!
