Week of May 12-16

Dear families,

Happy Mother's Day to all the children's moms! I hope you have had a lovely weekend with your families and I hope you liked the beautiful Monet- and Emily Carr-inspired art the children made as well as the "I love my mom because..." booklets. When your children are older you will treasure the things they did when they were little. Taking a photograph of their work before storing it away keeps it more at hand - plus you can send the photo to friends and family!

Last week we welcomed Officer Rich and Firefighter Paul to speak to the children and they learned a lot of practical information about safety. The children also received colouring books and got to explore Officer Rich's police cruiser which I think was a highlight! Officer Rich visits the morning class on Wednesday. As a follow up activity, the children are writing "Officer Rich said..." and "Firefighter Paul said.." with an accompanying drawing. The children's homework this weekend was to write their address and phone number by themselves (or dictate it to you if they couldn't).

Last week the children completed their May calendars and their "This is me in May" work. The SKs wrote the numbers 1-31 by themselves and the JKs 1-20. Good job! Many of the children wrote about the fun they had at SpringFest. I have posted their work on the hall bulletin board.

We are almost finished our Mo Willems' author study. We finished our pigeon posters and this week we will be comparing and contrasting Elephant, Piggie and Pigeon. We are also completing booklets called "Pigeon is..." The SKs did a good job on their Venn diagrams. Please remember that if the children have homework it should be handed in when completed.

We are starting a focused unit on Sight Words (aka "popcorn words" since they pop up so much in sentences). Look for a new folder in the next week or so. I will also be sending home lists of sight words to practice at home.

SK parents - please remember to send in your child's baby photo by June 1st at the latest. I need it as part of the Graduation DVD. Thank you!

The next (and final) Scholastic order is due May 31st.

Finally, thank you to our parent volunteers this week - Lily's mom and Brady's mom (white bags and snuggle books), and Sophie's mom and Victoria's dad (Mystery Readers).

I hope you have a wonderful week!
