September is Over and Autumn is Here

Dear families,

In this week's white TDSB bags you will find our three new "refridgerator words" which are THAT, GO and AT. Please practice them at home with your child. We also completed letter formation exercies and did our September calendars. We read the wonderful book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom together and made a coconut tree with our own names on it. We also completed Upper and Lower Case letter exercises with a coconut tree theme. If there is work in your child's bag that they were unable to complete in class please have them complete it at home and return on Monday.

The children did a wonderful job singing the Safety Song at our first Sharing Assembly, and they also enjoyed collecting fall leaves during our Terry Fox walk on Wednesday. We completed a booklet entitled "Leaves" in which the SK children wrote the names of leaf colours and the JKs cut and pasted the names. We are also learning a Fall Song and I must say that the children are really learning their "high frequency words" well! Good for them!

Our morning and afternoon classes classes are visiting the Book Fair on Thursday October 6th. Placing money in a labeled baggie is a great idea for the younger children. Students who bring a bag for their purchases will get a ballot for a draw!

Thank you to our Parent Volunteers this week: Jacob's mom was a Mystery Reader, Carly's dad did the morning and afternoon bags (and Carly helped too!), Logan's mom helped complete the afternoon bags, and Reading Club volunteers were Charlie's mom and Tatum's mom.

If your child received his/her first Snuggle Book today, please read the book with your child, sounding out and pointing to the words as you read. Your child will receive a new, different book each week if the old book is returned in the white TDSB bag.

Please remember to leave a pair of indoor shoes with your child to stay in their cubbies. Crocs work really well.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Letters and Letter Sounds are Everywhere!

Letter Recognition

Letters are Everywhere --Draw your child's attention to letters and words in his/her environment (signs, cereal boxes, toy boxes, menus, etc.)

Letter Writer--Have your child trace letters on/in different surfaces (sand, rice, cloth, etc.) Say the name of the letter with your child as they form the letter.

Letter Builder--Build letters with different materials such as macaroni, pipe cleaners, playdough, etc.

Print the Letters -- Practice printing upper and lower case letters. (one time each week)

Tactile Letters – Make a tactile letter for finger tracing. Write a letter on large paper. Trace with glue. Sprinkle with sand, salt, or rice. When dry, have your child trace the letter with his/her finger and say the name of the letter.

Rainbow Letters -- Write one letter on a large sheet of paper. Have your child rainbow write the letter by tracing over it with 4 or more colors of crayons or markers.

Letter Search -- Name a letter and ask your child to find as many different sizes, colors, and styles of that letter as possible to cut and glue onto a sheet of paper.

Which Letter? -- Write a row of different letters for your child. Say one of those letters and ask him/her to circle the letter you said.

Highlights -- Give some of your junk mail to your child and ask him/her to use a marker or crayon to highlight or circle certain letters. (exp. Highlight all of the Kk's orange, all of the Pp's purple, all of the Yy's blue, etc.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sounds

Flashcards/ABC Picture Chart—Daily do a quick review of letters and sounds. Show the card and have your child either…say the letter name and the picture name; say the letter name and the sound; say the sound and the picture name; or say the letter name, picture name, and another word that would start with that same letter.

Sticky Letter--Make 3x5 letter cards. Make several of the same letter. Work on one sound at a time. Have your child find an object in the house that begins with that sound and tape the card to it. Keep it up for a few days so that your child can be reminded of the sound each time they see the letter card.

"I Spy" letter sounds -- "I spy something that begins with the sound of b." Or, say, "I spy a ____. What letter do you hear at the beginning of that word." This is great for waiting in line or driving in the car.

Brainstorm--Give your child a sound and ask him/her to think of as many words as they can that start with that same sound.

ABC tub games--Get a butter dish or small bowl. Gather several household objects that begin with the same letter sound and a few that don't. Your child must figure out which items begin with the same sound and put them in the bowl.

Search the House -- Your child can search around the house for objects whose names begin with a certain letter. (exp. B- bananas, brush, band-aid, belt, etc.)

Picture Sound Collage -- Ask your child to search through magazines, etc. for pictures that start with a certain letter. Have them glue all the pictures they find onto one sheet of paper to form a letter collage.

Tongue Twisters -- Play with tongue twisters-traditional or made up! They are fun and emphasize the initial consonant. (exp. Pink pigs play with purple pegs.)

ABC Memory—Find 1 picture that starts with each letter of the alphabet. Also, make flashcards, 1 for each letter. Play memory by asking your child to match each letter to it's corresponding picture. (exp. An apple with the letter Aa)

Resource for Parents of Early Readers

An excellent guide for parents is the "Helping Your Child Learn to Read - A Parent's Guide". Here is the website:

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/brochure/earlyreading/readingguide.pdf

The Kindergarten Team will be conducting a Literacy Survey next week in order to assist us in our literacy instructional strategies. Please take some time this week to think about and note how much time you/a caregiver spend engaged in literacy activities with your child. We will be sending out the survey (hard copy) next week. Thank you!

Hallowe'en Parade and Party

Remember to wear your costume on Monday, October 31 for our annual Hallowe’en Parade and Classroom Party! The Parades will take place shortly after attendance and our class parties will start at 10:45 a.m. (morning class) and 2:30 p.m. (afternoon class). If you would like to volunteer to bring in (nut-free) snacks and drink boxes and to help distribute treats in the children’s Hallowe’en Bags please contact your Grade Parents. We need about 2-3 volunteers per class. Don’t forget your cameras! Thank you! Mrs. Tyndall

Autumn is here

Dear parents,

Another week of school is over and the children are really settling into their classroom routines which is wonderful. Thank you for attending Curriculum Night and for signing up to volunteer in the classroom this year! Our Grade Parents (Anna's mom and Sienna's mom for the Morning Class, Isobel's mom and Lewis' mom for the Afternoon Class) are putting the volunteer names in a calendar which they will email to you and we will also post the sign up sheet at my classroom entrance. If you switch dates with another parent please let us know.

We will be having Hallowe'en and Holiday/December parties and if you would like to volunteer to bring (nut-free) treats, juice boxes, etc. please let our Grade Parents know. Our Hallowe'en Party will be on Monday, October 31st and our Holiday/December Party will be on Friday, December 23rd.

Thank you as well to the parents who signed up to do the white TDSB bags and Snuggle books. I only had one sign up sheet posted instead of two (one for a.m., one for p.m.) so I will email parents who signed up to confirm their dates and then email everyone with the dates still available. I will be sending home weekly "Snuggle Up books" starting in October. These little readers are an opportunity for you to read with your child at home. Your child will receive a new book each week (if the previous book is returned).

Our first Mystery Reader was Cameron D's mom! The kids loved the Robert Munsch story she read and it is always a treat to have a visitor in our classroom.

Thank you for your "Toonie Tuesday" contributions for the Seeds of Hope in Africa, and thank you for any and all contributions for the Terry Fox walk/run.

This week we focused on learning/reviewing the alphabet by tracing the upper case and lower case letters (JK) and by writing the alphabet from memory (SK). We are also learning/reviewing the first of Jolly Phonics sounds which is "S". The children did a great job sounding out their "home" words of "I" "in" and "is" and have three new "refridgerator" words to work on this week which are in their white TDSB bags. We are also learning/reviewing our numbers and how to write them correctly. Please remember/encourage your child to always start from the top when writing and to use pencil. Some of the children are learning how to recognize and write their name and practicing this is at home is very helpful as well.

If your child's work is stamped "Please finish for homework - Mrs. Tyndall" please have your child complete the work s/he didn't finish in class and return it on Monday. Thank you.

The children took their first library books home this week! We go to the Library once a week and the children's books and library bags are due the following week.

Autumn is here and we will be talking about the changing of the seasons while the trees' leaves turn their beautiful colours. Please bring in a pair of school shoes that your child can keep in his/her cubby all year. Crocs and slippers work really well. As the cooler weather approaches please encourage your child to independently zip and unzip his/her jacket.

We are preparing a song about Safety for our first Sharing Assembly on September 26. All the children will be receiving an award throughout the year at our monthly Sharing Assemblies and if your child will be this month's recipient I will send you a separate email so that you can attend if possible.

That's our news for this week. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Tyndall
