Happy Holidays

Dear families,

Only "one more sleep" until Christmas! You can follow Santa on Google Maps as he travels around the world - the kids love it!

Thank you to everyone who attended the Christmas Concert and to our announcers Tate and Tatum who wished "for peace on earth and a Merry Christmas." The children did a wonderful job singing "Hello" in 20 different languages from around the world, and they also sang about Alfie the Elf and his new glasses.

Thank you as well to our Parent Volunteers over the last few weeks:

Mystery Readers - Nathalie's mom, Tate's sister Avi, Taylor's mom, Liam's mom and Cameron B.'s mom

Reading Club - Sienna's mom, Alex H.'s mom, Isobel's mom and Cameron D.'s mom

White Bags and Snuggle Books - Jack B.'s mom, Jonny's mom, Logan's mom

Christmas Party Volunteers - Anna's mom, Dana's mom, Jack B.'s mom, Charlie's mom, Liam's mom, Logan's mom

The Christmas party was lots of fun and the children made six crafts to take home.

Thank you so very much for all the lovely gifts as well. It's a gift each day to me teaching your lovely children.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and all the best in the new year.

Thursday, December 8, 2011.

Dear families,

A reminder that tomorrow, Friday, is a Professional Activity Day and the school will be closed to students.

The morning class met their Reading Buddies this week from Ms. Sunde's 2/3 class. They had a fun time getting to know one another and reading together. They will meet each week throughout the year. The afternoon class will start Reading Buddies in the new year.

Thank you to Logan's mom who brought in the Snowman foam craft. Thank you as well to this week's Reading Club helpers - Charlie's mom and Kasen's mom. This week's Mystery Readers were Charlie's dad and brother Zach (good job!), and Isobel's mom. The white bags and Snuggle Books were done by Mrs. Tyndall (a.m. class) and Taylor's mom (p.m. class).

The children are doing a great job learning their anchor words. I have sent home another copy of them to practice at home. Great job!

Thank you to all the parents who so kindly contributed to the baskets for the families in the Stonegate Community. Thank you as well to our grade parents who helped organize this. The children have made a nice card for each of the families.

The children did a very nice job writing about their favourite part of the Dr. Seuss play. We also worked on our Phonics Books.

In this week's white bags you will find the snack and mystery bag schedules for January and February. If you make any changes (i.e. switch days with another child) please let me know. You will also find a letter we wrote to Santa. We hope he writes back!

Some children were wondering where to find a Santa hat - they are easily found at any dollar store.

Have a wonderful weekend. We are are looking forward to the Holiday Concert on Tuesday. Please remember that the children should be dressed (white top, black bottom, Santa or Elf hat) and ready to rehearse in the classroom by 5:30 p.m. Thank you.

Three weeks until the Holidays!

Hello families,

December is here and this is a special time for children as they look forward to Santa's visit and all the excitement of the season. The children were delighted to see the classroom decorated with Holiday decorations on December 1st. It's going to be a fun month!

The children had a wonderful time at the musical "Seussical" and a special thank you to the parent volunteers: the moms of Yoel, Cameron D., Logan, Jacob, Alex P., Ava, Dana and Sarah did a wonderful job.

This week the children made matching mittens (more challenging than it seems!), worked on their Phonics Duotangs (Set 2 for the SKs), decorated the Cat in the Hat's hat, starting learning their new poem about seasons ("Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall"), did their December calendars, and practiced their songs for the Holiday Concert.

Thank you to our other parent volunteers this week: our morning Mystery Reader was Ava's mom, Carly's mom was the morning Reading Club helper, and Anna's mom did the morning bags. Afternoon parents, be sure to sign up for volunteer opportunities in the classroom (Tuesdays for Reading Club, Thursdays for Mystery Reader and Fridays for White Bags and Snuggle Books); the children love to have their parents visit and help! Contact your grade parents Tamara and Simone to sign up.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Friday, November 25, 2011

Dear families,

The children are all very excited about seeing "Seussical" on Monday (a.m. class) and Tuesday (p.m. class). Afternoon Parents please remember to arrive early on Tuesday at 11:45 a.m.

We have been learning about measurement and watched Peep measure his pond then measured our own (plastic) turtles. We also are learning our Anchor Words -- please practice these high-frequency words with your child at home. We completed 4 different art plates, matching our four seasons and talked about what happens in the winter (birds fly south, animals hibernate, etc.)

The children did a lovely job performing their two poems "Little Poppy" and "Down, Down" at the Sharing Assembly. Congratulations to Nathalie, Lola, Kasen, Myles, and Cameron B. who received certificates for Empathy/Being a Good Friend.

The SKs have started Set Two of their phonics duotangs. Great Job! We are now learning the sounds C/K, E, H, M, R and D.

Last week the afternoon class had a surprise visit from Cinderella! Wow! Thank you so much to LKS mom Carrie!

Thank you to my parent volunteers of the last two weeks:

Reading Club: Charlie's mom, Ava's mom, Lewis' mom
Mystery Reader: Samantha's dad, Anna's mom, Ava's Dad
White bags/Snuggle Books: Ava's mom, Sam's mom, Lewis' mom, Luke's mom

We are starting to learn our songs for the Holiday Concert which will take place on Tuesday, December 13 at 6 p.m. in the gym. The children should wear Santa/elf hats if possible, white tops, and black bottoms.

It was a pleasure speaking with all of you last week about your child's progress. During the interviews we also spoke about a handy reference book to have at home -- the "First Dictionary." The one we use at school is published by Harcourt Brace Canada: ISDN 0774714492

Have a wonderful weekend.

Monday, November 14

Dear families,

This week we focused on Remembrance Day activities in preparation for the Assembly on Friday. The children listened very respectively during the assembly and I was very proud of their attentiveness. We completed a cutting, pasting and word tracing poppy craft, completed the sentence "I was brave when..." in writing with an accompanying drawing, practiced our two poems (see below), completed our JK and SK Number books (if they were sent home incomplete please return them after your child has completed the booklet), the SKs read and matched Autumn Words (good reading!) and the Alphabet Worm, and the JKs and SK made a Canada Goose craft; we are starting anew unit about changing seasons and what animals do when winter comes.

Our Poems this week were"Little Poppy" (to the tune of Frere Jacques) and "Down, down" (spoken aloud):

Little Poppy little poppy
Red and Black, red and black
It helps me to remember, it helps me to remember
To be a kind friend, to be a kind friend.

Down, down, down, down
The leaves are falling
In their lovely dresses
Of red and brown
Down, down, down, down
While the flowers sleep,
Careful as you run along
Don't make a peep.

Please practice reading these poems with your child. The children are doing a wonderful job of reading and recognizing these words, guessing which one comes next, and sounding them out. Good job!

Thank you so much to this week's Parent Volunteers:

Reading Club: Sarah's Grandma Shirley/ Cameron D's mom
Mystery Reader: Charlie's mom/ Nico's mom
White bags and Snuggle Books: Ava's mom/Mrs. Tyndall

I look forward to speaking with you about your child's progress this week during Parent/Teacher Interviews.

Mrs. Tyndall

Friday, November 4

A special Thank You to my parent volunteers who helped at our Hallowe'en Party on Monday: Anna and Liam's mom from the Morning Class, and the moms of Tatum, Logan, Chloe, Raine, and Samantha in the Afternoon Class. We made Model Magic pencil toppers, masks, decorated pumpkins, and made mummies and kites. Thank you also to the parents who brought in snacks.

Our Reading Club Helper this week was Anna from the Morning Class. I have bought several new series of the Bob books (I have series 1-5 as well as Kindergarten Sight Words and Grade One Sight Words). They are excellent. I have also bought a Curious George Phonics set which I think the children will like. With the coupons from your Scholastics Orders I have purchased four Phonics Sets: Batman, My LIttle Pony, Scooby Doo, and Froggy Phonics. Thank you for your Scholastic Orders! Please remember to read each week's Snuggle Book with your child and to return it for a new one.

Our Mystery Readers this week were Dana's dad from the morning class and Myles' mom from the afternoon class. Thank you!

If you have ordered a Berenstain Bears set from Scholastic and have not received it please let me know.

I still need clean glass baby food jars with their lids (small and large) if you have them. Thank you!

Our White Bags and Snuggle Books were done by Charlie's mom (a.m.) and myself in the afternoon.

This week we worked on our Phonics duotangs and number booklets, and as well we completed sentences and drew pictures related to our book The Grouchy Ladybug; I feel happy when.... I feel grouchy when.... The SK's writing is really coming along! Don't forget your finger spaces between the words!

The children also started reading from Picture Dictionaries. If you don't have a picture dictionary I really recommend having one at home. We use the edition published by Harcourt Brace Canada called "First Dictionary."

Next week Friday is Remembrance Day. We will be learning about this important day and creating a special poppy craft as well as doing numeracy and literacy-related tasks.

I look forward to meeting you at our Parent Teacher Interviews in a few weeks. SK children will be receiving Progress Reports on November 14, JKs will receive their first report in February, and both JKs and SKs receive a report in June. All parents are welcome to come in for an interview the week of November 14 to discuss their child's progress. Just go to schoolbookings.net to book an available interview time.

Have a wonderful weekend. The weather is supposed to be beautiful!

Hallowe'en is Coming!

Dear Parents,

It’s hard to believe Hallowe’en is on Monday – what an exciting time of year for the children! Please remember to only bring in NUT FREE treats if you are sending them in for your child’s classmates on Monday. I have made bags for the children to sort the treats by finding their classmates’ names. Thank you so much to the parents who have volunteered to help with the party and to bring in snacks. I have fun craft activities planned for the children on this special day.

This week we completed Hallowe’en booklets for your child to read to you at home, we did Hallowe’en-themed counting activities, spelling/vocabulary activities, and colouring as well. We practiced reading/sounding out our Hallowe'en words with pictures, without pictures, and covering up all the letters except the first, then the second, the third, etc. until we sounded them out. The Seniors did before-and-after activities, completing which letter came before or after a given letter of the alphabet. They did the same for numbers. The Juniors also coloured in ghosts according to the colour word on them, drew 1-10 pumpkins seeds, and all the children cut and pasted Hallowe’en words which corresponded to pictures. They also did a sequencing activity, putting six pictures in order of the steps between a pumpkin and a jack-o-lantern. We also read fun and spooky stories about the Berenstain Bears.

Thank you to the parents who attended our second Sharing Assembly. The children did a great job reciting the poem "Autumn Leaves." Congratulations to Logan, Dana, Anna, Raine and Isobel who received a certificate for "Responsibility." Wonderful job!

This week we also completed The Grouchy Ladybug and the children completed the sentence “I liked The Grouchy Ladybug story because....” and drew an accompanying picture to their written words.

Our “fridge door words” this week are COME, LOOK and HERE. Please practice reading these at home when you open the fridge door (like “Open Sesame!”). Please also read your child's weekly Snuggle Book with your child. The more you read with your child, one day your child will read to you!

Thank you to this week’s Parent Volunteers: Sienna’s nanny and Samantha’s mom did Reading Club, the Morning Mystery Reader was Alex H.’s mom, and the white bags were done by Lola’s mom (morning) and Cameron B.’s parents (afternoon). Thank you so much!
A special thank you to Declan’s mom who found some castanets for us: they help us remember the C/K sound. Thank you! And thank you to Myles’ mom for the Play-Doh tub and toys!

Thank you for returning your child’s Phonics Duotangs. The Seniors will do six sets this year and should be completed Set One by November. The Juniors work on their booklets throughout the year and if they complete it early I have more phonics-related activities for them to work on. Great work! I will mark their work so far and will return the books again after we learn and practice more sounds in class. The children should definitely know S,A,T, I, P, N and C/K.

If anyone has extra glass baby food jars and lids please send them in for crafts and paint. Thank you. The larger or smaller sizes are both great. We need the lids as well.

Please support “Hallowe’en for Hunger”; Lambton Kingsway is collecting non-perishable food items for the Daily Bread Food Bank. Items are being collected in bins by the front office. Thank you.

The following parents will be our volunteers for “Seussical the Musical” on November 28 (Morning) and November 29th (Afternoon):

Dana’s mom
William’s mom
Ava’s mom
Sarah’s mom

Yoel’s mom
Cameron D’s mom
Logan’s mom
Jacob’s mom

Thank you so much to everyone who offered to volunteer.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Happy Friday

This week we read Eric Carle's "The Grouchy Ladybug" and completed several activities related to this wonderful story: we took turns placing spots on a big ladybug (left side for beginning sounds, right side for ending sounds), made little ladybugs, learned about "left, right, centre, top and bottom" and started to learn about telling time. Next week we will be completing writing and art activities about feelings (grouchy, happy, etc.). The children loved the book and if you have a copy please be sure to read it together. If you would like to borrow my copy just let me know.

Our new poem is called Down, down:

Down, down, down, down
The leaves are falling down
In their lovely dresses
Of red and brown
Down, down, down, down
While the flowers sleep
Careful as you run along
Don't make a peep.

Thank you for your Scholastic Orders. They arrived in three separate shipments and I am expecting one more. Our next order (Christmas and holidays) is due on December 1st to ensure everything arrives before the holidays.

Please remember that your permission forms and 19.00 for "Seussical" are due on Monday.

If you have volunteered to do White Bags/Snuggle Books and can't come, please be sure to call the school to let me know so that I can do the bags/snuggle books myself in time for dismissal. Please remember to return your child's Snuggle Books in their white bag, NOT in their Library bag. Thank you.

Thank you so much to this week's volunteers:

Morning Class: Dana's mom was Mystery Reader and also did Reading Club.
Afternoon Class: Taylor's dad was Mystery Reader, Taylor's mom did Reading Club and Olivia's mom did the white bags/snuggle books.

A special Thank You to Angelina's mom who generously donated boxes of paper plates, cups and napkins. Thank you so much!

The Refridgerator Words for this week are UP, ARE and ME.

If anyone has a pair of (Spanish) castanets I would very much appreciate borrowing them to help remind the children of their new C/K sound.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

This Week's News

Hello families,

This week we worked on colour and shape patterning and started our Phonics Folders. We have practiced/reviewed the sounds S,A,T,I,P and N. We are also learning about the changing seasons and our new poem is entitled Autumn Leaves:

Green leaves, yellow leaves, red leaves and brown,
Falling, falling, blanketing the town.
Oak leaves, maple leaves, apple leaves and pear,
Falling, whispering, "Autumn's in the air!"
Big leaves, little leaves, pointed leaves and round,
Falling, nestling, carpeting the ground.

We went to the Computer Lab and the children really enjoyed playing in Bailey's Book House (an excellent TDSB phonics/reading program). Please allow your child to practice using the mouse at home. A good idea is to put a little sticker on the (left) side of the mouse where you child "clicks" the mouse so they learn more easily how to position their hand.

Thank you for your Scholastic Orders! Most of the items have come in and I am anticipating that the rest of the orders will come in this week. The next order is due at the end of October.

We are going on a Field Trip to the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People. The Kindergarten Classes will be seeing the play "Seussical" based on Dr. Seuss stories. The morning class will go on Monday, November 28 and the afternoon classes will go on Tuesday, November 29. Please read the documents that were sent home on Friday and return your child's permission form and 19.00 by Monday, October 24 at the latest. If you would like to volunteer, each class requires 4 volunteers (their tickets and transportation are covered by the cost of the tickets). Please let your grade parents know and they will accept volunteers on a "first come, first serve basis".

Please be sure to return your child's Snuggle Book after you have practiced it so that s/he can take out a new one each week. A good day to remember to hand the book and your child's white bag is by each WEDNESDAY.

Finally, thank you very much to our Parent Volunteers of this week:

The white bags and snuggle books were done by Jack B's mom, Charlie's mom, Logan's mom and Myles' mom; the Mystery Readers were Sarah's sister Paige and Olivia's mom, and Reading Club was done by Charlie's mom, Tatum's mom and Jacob's mom. Please remember to check the volunteer schedule to confirm your date and if you are unable to come please let me know as soon as possible so that another parent has the opportunity to volunteer.

Thank you,

Beverley

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone

First of all, I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving weekend. The weather is supposed to be beautiful!

Thank you so much to my Parent Volunteers of this week: Chloe's mom did Reading Club, Sienna's mom and Mrs. Najder did the White bags, and Cameron D's mom and Carly's dad were our Mystery Readers.

Please remember to return your Snuggle Books each week with your white bags in order to get a new Snuggle Book. The morning class Snuggle Books are the Bob Books. The afternoon Snuggle Books are three different series of early readers.

Our "refridgerator words" this week are MY, SEE and THIS.

This week we learned/reviewed the sounds S,A,T,I, P and N. You can make many, many words with these letters!

The afternoon class enjoyed going to the computer lab and playing on Baily's Book House. If you have a computer at home plase encourage your child to use the mouse so that they can point and click as well as drag. A fun website is starfall.com. Tvokids.org and pbskids.org are also fun and educational! Reader Rabbit is a terrific phonics program as well.

We completed a lot of fun Thanksgiving themed activities this week including the Turkey Poem, counting turkeys, and turkey puppets and patterns. We also read several books including "Stone Soup" and talked about the meaning of giving, sharing and Thanksgiving.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend with your families.

September is Over and Autumn is Here

Dear families,

In this week's white TDSB bags you will find our three new "refridgerator words" which are THAT, GO and AT. Please practice them at home with your child. We also completed letter formation exercies and did our September calendars. We read the wonderful book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom together and made a coconut tree with our own names on it. We also completed Upper and Lower Case letter exercises with a coconut tree theme. If there is work in your child's bag that they were unable to complete in class please have them complete it at home and return on Monday.

The children did a wonderful job singing the Safety Song at our first Sharing Assembly, and they also enjoyed collecting fall leaves during our Terry Fox walk on Wednesday. We completed a booklet entitled "Leaves" in which the SK children wrote the names of leaf colours and the JKs cut and pasted the names. We are also learning a Fall Song and I must say that the children are really learning their "high frequency words" well! Good for them!

Our morning and afternoon classes classes are visiting the Book Fair on Thursday October 6th. Placing money in a labeled baggie is a great idea for the younger children. Students who bring a bag for their purchases will get a ballot for a draw!

Thank you to our Parent Volunteers this week: Jacob's mom was a Mystery Reader, Carly's dad did the morning and afternoon bags (and Carly helped too!), Logan's mom helped complete the afternoon bags, and Reading Club volunteers were Charlie's mom and Tatum's mom.

If your child received his/her first Snuggle Book today, please read the book with your child, sounding out and pointing to the words as you read. Your child will receive a new, different book each week if the old book is returned in the white TDSB bag.

Please remember to leave a pair of indoor shoes with your child to stay in their cubbies. Crocs work really well.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Letters and Letter Sounds are Everywhere!

Letter Recognition

Letters are Everywhere --Draw your child's attention to letters and words in his/her environment (signs, cereal boxes, toy boxes, menus, etc.)

Letter Writer--Have your child trace letters on/in different surfaces (sand, rice, cloth, etc.) Say the name of the letter with your child as they form the letter.

Letter Builder--Build letters with different materials such as macaroni, pipe cleaners, playdough, etc.

Print the Letters -- Practice printing upper and lower case letters. (one time each week)

Tactile Letters – Make a tactile letter for finger tracing. Write a letter on large paper. Trace with glue. Sprinkle with sand, salt, or rice. When dry, have your child trace the letter with his/her finger and say the name of the letter.

Rainbow Letters -- Write one letter on a large sheet of paper. Have your child rainbow write the letter by tracing over it with 4 or more colors of crayons or markers.

Letter Search -- Name a letter and ask your child to find as many different sizes, colors, and styles of that letter as possible to cut and glue onto a sheet of paper.

Which Letter? -- Write a row of different letters for your child. Say one of those letters and ask him/her to circle the letter you said.

Highlights -- Give some of your junk mail to your child and ask him/her to use a marker or crayon to highlight or circle certain letters. (exp. Highlight all of the Kk's orange, all of the Pp's purple, all of the Yy's blue, etc.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sounds

Flashcards/ABC Picture Chart—Daily do a quick review of letters and sounds. Show the card and have your child either…say the letter name and the picture name; say the letter name and the sound; say the sound and the picture name; or say the letter name, picture name, and another word that would start with that same letter.

Sticky Letter--Make 3x5 letter cards. Make several of the same letter. Work on one sound at a time. Have your child find an object in the house that begins with that sound and tape the card to it. Keep it up for a few days so that your child can be reminded of the sound each time they see the letter card.

"I Spy" letter sounds -- "I spy something that begins with the sound of b." Or, say, "I spy a ____. What letter do you hear at the beginning of that word." This is great for waiting in line or driving in the car.

Brainstorm--Give your child a sound and ask him/her to think of as many words as they can that start with that same sound.

ABC tub games--Get a butter dish or small bowl. Gather several household objects that begin with the same letter sound and a few that don't. Your child must figure out which items begin with the same sound and put them in the bowl.

Search the House -- Your child can search around the house for objects whose names begin with a certain letter. (exp. B- bananas, brush, band-aid, belt, etc.)

Picture Sound Collage -- Ask your child to search through magazines, etc. for pictures that start with a certain letter. Have them glue all the pictures they find onto one sheet of paper to form a letter collage.

Tongue Twisters -- Play with tongue twisters-traditional or made up! They are fun and emphasize the initial consonant. (exp. Pink pigs play with purple pegs.)

ABC Memory—Find 1 picture that starts with each letter of the alphabet. Also, make flashcards, 1 for each letter. Play memory by asking your child to match each letter to it's corresponding picture. (exp. An apple with the letter Aa)

Resource for Parents of Early Readers

An excellent guide for parents is the "Helping Your Child Learn to Read - A Parent's Guide". Here is the website:

http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/brochure/earlyreading/readingguide.pdf

The Kindergarten Team will be conducting a Literacy Survey next week in order to assist us in our literacy instructional strategies. Please take some time this week to think about and note how much time you/a caregiver spend engaged in literacy activities with your child. We will be sending out the survey (hard copy) next week. Thank you!

Hallowe'en Parade and Party

Remember to wear your costume on Monday, October 31 for our annual Hallowe’en Parade and Classroom Party! The Parades will take place shortly after attendance and our class parties will start at 10:45 a.m. (morning class) and 2:30 p.m. (afternoon class). If you would like to volunteer to bring in (nut-free) snacks and drink boxes and to help distribute treats in the children’s Hallowe’en Bags please contact your Grade Parents. We need about 2-3 volunteers per class. Don’t forget your cameras! Thank you! Mrs. Tyndall

Autumn is here

Dear parents,

Another week of school is over and the children are really settling into their classroom routines which is wonderful. Thank you for attending Curriculum Night and for signing up to volunteer in the classroom this year! Our Grade Parents (Anna's mom and Sienna's mom for the Morning Class, Isobel's mom and Lewis' mom for the Afternoon Class) are putting the volunteer names in a calendar which they will email to you and we will also post the sign up sheet at my classroom entrance. If you switch dates with another parent please let us know.

We will be having Hallowe'en and Holiday/December parties and if you would like to volunteer to bring (nut-free) treats, juice boxes, etc. please let our Grade Parents know. Our Hallowe'en Party will be on Monday, October 31st and our Holiday/December Party will be on Friday, December 23rd.

Thank you as well to the parents who signed up to do the white TDSB bags and Snuggle books. I only had one sign up sheet posted instead of two (one for a.m., one for p.m.) so I will email parents who signed up to confirm their dates and then email everyone with the dates still available. I will be sending home weekly "Snuggle Up books" starting in October. These little readers are an opportunity for you to read with your child at home. Your child will receive a new book each week (if the previous book is returned).

Our first Mystery Reader was Cameron D's mom! The kids loved the Robert Munsch story she read and it is always a treat to have a visitor in our classroom.

Thank you for your "Toonie Tuesday" contributions for the Seeds of Hope in Africa, and thank you for any and all contributions for the Terry Fox walk/run.

This week we focused on learning/reviewing the alphabet by tracing the upper case and lower case letters (JK) and by writing the alphabet from memory (SK). We are also learning/reviewing the first of Jolly Phonics sounds which is "S". The children did a great job sounding out their "home" words of "I" "in" and "is" and have three new "refridgerator" words to work on this week which are in their white TDSB bags. We are also learning/reviewing our numbers and how to write them correctly. Please remember/encourage your child to always start from the top when writing and to use pencil. Some of the children are learning how to recognize and write their name and practicing this is at home is very helpful as well.

If your child's work is stamped "Please finish for homework - Mrs. Tyndall" please have your child complete the work s/he didn't finish in class and return it on Monday. Thank you.

The children took their first library books home this week! We go to the Library once a week and the children's books and library bags are due the following week.

Autumn is here and we will be talking about the changing of the seasons while the trees' leaves turn their beautiful colours. Please bring in a pair of school shoes that your child can keep in his/her cubby all year. Crocs and slippers work really well. As the cooler weather approaches please encourage your child to independently zip and unzip his/her jacket.

We are preparing a song about Safety for our first Sharing Assembly on September 26. All the children will be receiving an award throughout the year at our monthly Sharing Assemblies and if your child will be this month's recipient I will send you a separate email so that you can attend if possible.

That's our news for this week. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Tyndall

Our first full week is over!

Wow our first full week with all the students in class is over and I was so pleased to see how the children are learning our classroom routines and rules so quickly.

I have sent home work we have done in this week's white TDSB bag. If your child was not able to complete hisor her work in class, please help them do it for homework and return it next week.

A big thank you to our Grade Parents for volunteering for this important position: Sheila Solby and Dee Shepherd for the Morning Class, and Tamara Barclay and Simone O'Sullivan for the Afternoon Class. They will be the contact people for classroom volunteering this year and they have sign up sheets if you would like to sign up to be Mystery Reader, do Reading Club, or help with Friday's Book/white TDSB bags, as well as assistance with classroom parties (Hallowe'en, e.g.). They will have the sign up sheets on Curriculum Night as well.

This Tuesday it is "Toonie Tuesday" and LKS is collecting for Seeds of Hope in Africa which helps build schools. Please consider donating a toonie on Tuesday. Thank you.

The Terry Fox pledge forms have also been sent home and should be returned as soon as possible. Thank you!

Kindergarten Curriculum Night is Thursday, September 22 at 5:30 p.m. in the gym. I am looking forward to seeing everyone then.

Next week we will be reading Chicka Chicka Boom and doing alphabet-related activities. If you have this wonderful book at home please read it to your children. They love it!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Tyndall

Reading Club

Morning Reading Club
Tuesdays 10:45-11:15 a.m.

Afternoon Reading Club
Tuesdays 2:30-3:00 p.m.

Once a week we have Reading Club in which parent volunteers assist the children one-on-one in reading activities provided by the teacher. The children choose from several simple readers such as the Bob Books. This is a wonderful opportunity to help the children in the process of learning to read: sounding out letters, recognizing high frequency words, relating stories to pictures, etc. Our Reading Club is at the table in the hall outside the classroom. Sign up sheets for parent volunteers will be provided on Curriculum Night.

Thursdays 2:45-3:00 p.m.

Each week we have a Mystery Reader come to our class! Mystery Readers are usually a mom or a dad who has a child in the class. Sometimes a relative comes instead of a parent. This is a surprise visit; the child has no idea who the mystery reader is. It is wonderful to see a child's face light up when s/he sees his/her mom or dad come into the classroom.

If you volunteer to be a Mystery Reader please bring in one or two of your child's favourite picture books to read to the class.

I have found that the above times work best because by then we are finished tidying up from our activities. Please go directly to the office and they will buzz me in the classroom to let me know that our Mystery Reader has arrived. I will send the Special Person of the day to pick the reader up.

Thank you for your support in this exciting event! Volunteer sign up sheets will be posted on Curriculum Night.

Playground Safety Rules

Safety in the Playground is essential. Please encourage your child to follow the same safety rules that we follow whenever s/he uses the equipment. Please share this information with your caregiver as well.

In the Adventure Playground and Kindergarten Playground area, remember to:

- keep your hands free. Keep food and toys away from the playground.
- use bare hands only when travelling the monkey bars
- let your self down safely rather than jumping down from any part of the playground
-go down the slides on your bottom, feet first, head up
- have one person at a time on the monkey bars, slide, bridge or climbing wall
- keep your hands and feet away from others
- never walk/run under the monkey bar area
- keep the sand on the ground inside the barriers
- walk at all times when using the structures
- use your eyes to look for safe places to be

Please note that the Playgrounds are required throughout the school day for DPA and outdoor play. The community is welcome to use the structures after school hours or on weekends or holidays.

Thank you

Medical and Information Forms

Please remember to hand in your child's medical form and the information form on Monday. I have sent extra copies home in this week's white TDSB bags. Also, the school athletic t-shirts are for Grades 1-8 only. Thanks!

Snack Schedule and Information

Dear Parents,

Starting next week I am asking the parents to take turns bringing in the snack for the whole class. I will set up the snack schedule, distribute copies to you, and post it at the classroom entrance as well. Please make sure to bring enough snacks for 20 children. A two-month calendar will be sent home every other month indicating your day to provide snack. This will coincide with your child’s special day in that they are the class leader, present Show and Tell, take the attendance to the office and do other special tasks.

Your child’s special day will also correspond with his/her birthday. On his/her birthday your child can bring in a special individual snack such as cupcakes or cookies to celebrate. Please refrain from bringing in cakes as they are difficult to cut and serve it to the entire class.

Please do not bring in any snacks containing nuts as nut allergies can be very severe or even fatal. All baked goods or special treats must be commercially purchased and be labelled nut-free.

The days of the week are designated to specific snack foods to provide a healthy variety of food.

Monday: washed and cut vegetables with or without dip-carrots, celery sticks, green/red peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower etc.

Tuesday: crackers with cheese, cheese whiz, spreadable cream cheese

Wednesday: washed and cut fruit-apples, oranges, pears, bananas, grapes, strawberries etc.

Thursday: your choice of a healthy snack

Friday: cookies, muffins, rice krispy squares etc.
(must be commercially produced and labelled nut-free)

Thank you for your continued support.

Kindergarten Open House

The Kindergarten Open House on Tuesday, September 6. A reminder that the Morning class is invited to drop in from 10:00 am to 11:00 am and the Afternoon class may visit from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The Open House is an opportunity for the children to visit the classroom with their families, meet their classmates and myself. The students can also find their cubbies, explore the classroom and see old friends. All the Seniors will be attending school on Wednesday, September 7. The Juniors will begin on the date noted on their placement letter.

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Dear Parents,

I hope you have had a wonderful summer with your family and friends. My colleagues and I have been busy preparing our classrooms for an exciting year of Kindergarten and I am looking forward to working with your children this year. My goal as an educator is to create a happy and inviting classroom where children will learn, create friendships, improve skills and reach their individual potentials. Each child is unique and I am dedicated to working with your child to reach their full potential. We will work hard together to create an enjoyable and productive learning environment.

Drop Off and Pick Up

Children should be at school by 8:55 a.m. (morning class) and 12:30 p.m. (afternoon class) at the latest. It is important that they are in line and ready to come in for entry when the bell rings. “Oh Canada” and announcements start promptly at 9 a.m. If your children come in a little earlier they will have time to greet their friends and settle in class before the final bell rings. I appreciate your assistance in helping me establish daily routines with your children such as saying good bye to parents and getting ready for circle, lining up inside and outside the classroom, bringing notes and forms and other items to and from school, and other basic routines. Much of September is focusing on learning classroom routines. If your child if going to be absent please contact the office 4-394-7890.
Please be kind enough to keep strollers behind the fence and keep the exit door clear so that your children may exit with a clear view of their caretakers. Dismissal is at 11:20 a.m. for the morning class and 3:05 for the afternoon class.
If your child will be going home with someone other than parents or regular caregivers (grandparents, nannies, e.g.) please inform me in written form. If for any reason you are unable to pick your child up on time please contact the school office (416-394-7890).

Outdoor Play

Outdoor play is a vital component of the Kindergarten Program. Weather permitting we will play outside. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately. You can also make this a learning experience for your child by checking the weather report in the newspaper together. This routine will also help them when we discuss the calendar and weather at circle time.

Clothing and Personal Belongings

Please assist your child in learning how to manage their clothing and to dress themselves. Clothing that is easy to remove and put back on with larger style zippers and buttons will assist your child. The only item that students need to begin school is a back pack. Please ensure that the back pack is large enough to hold a library book, school work which will be sent home and perhaps a water bottle. Backpacks should be labelled with your child's
name. Provide opportunities for your child to practise opening, closing, putting materials in and taking materials out of his/her backpack. Independence is an importatn part of Kindergarten.

White TDSB Bags

Each Friday your child’s personal white TDSB bag will be sent home and must be returned on the following Monday. The bag will include some of the work your child has done (other work is ongoing and is retained for report card purposes, etc.), notes home, artwork, etc. Your child will also receive a green bag from the school library and this must be returned each week along with your child’s library book. We go to the library once a week and the computer lab once a week.

I welcome parent volunteers in the classroom for the following weekly activities:

Reading Club – assist children individually to learn to read
Mystery Reader – read a book (brought from home) to the class
Grade Parents (two) – do monthly volunteer schedule, assist with classroom events, compile parent contact list for distribution
White TDSB Bags and Snuggle Books – put schoolwork etc. in white bags

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns and be sure to look for weekly updates of my blog. I look forward to a wonderful school year!

Thursday, June 16

Dear families,

It's hard to believe that there are only 10 more school days left until the beginning of summer holidays! We have been busy preparing for tomorrow's last Sharing Assembly, at which the children will sing a Father's Day song. They have also made special booklets for their dad's special day on Sunday.

We have also made a little art project called "In the Summer..." which is on display on our bulletin board, along with a booklet we made about the twenty-three summer words we have learned.

The children loved going to their Reading Buddies' classrooms this week to participate in their Pioneer Village displays. The Grade Threes role-played different people in a pioneer community and our JKs and SKs enjoyed seeing them in costume and learning about pioneer days in an Ontario town. We visited the displays in Mrs. Shklar's room, Mr. Ross's room and Ms. Sunde's room. We also had fun playing Pioneer Games in the gym with the Grade Three classes. Well done Grade Threes!

We have a new tent in the Home Centre, thanks to your Scholastic Book orders. It has a design of the Eric Carle book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and the children love playing in it. Thank you!

I have also set up a store with many items that are single coin prices. the children are having fun selling and buying items using Canadian coins.

In the Science Centre I have added some new items for the children to explore as well as some special Canadian coins. I am also going to be adding a "tornado tube vortex" (using two plastic pop bottles).

Many thanks to our parent volunteers over the last week: Mystery Readers were Spencer's mom, Sarah's sister, and Jamie's brother and mom; Reading Club was done by Spencer's mom, Alexandra's mom, Maya's mom, and Griffin's mom. Bags this week were done by Ava's mom and Scarlett's mom. Many thanks.

Please come by the library after school today to have some cake and cookies at our Volunteer Tea.

Have a wonderful Father's Day this Sunday.

Hello parents,

The last two weeks have been busy in our classroom. The children were very excited to let our Painted Lady Butterflies go after watching them grow from larvae. They also learned about two- and three-dimensional shapes, went to the Book Fair, sang a song about Spring (The Farmer Plants a Seed...") at the Sharing Assembly, started learning about Canadian coins, and had our Artist in the Classroom visit (their work was wonderful!).

Thank you to our Parent Volunteers: Reading Club was done by Alexandra's mom, Maya's mom, and Tatum's mom; the Mystery Readers were Griffin's dad, Alexandra's mom, Victoria's mom, and Lola's aunt, and the TDSB bags and snuggle books were done by Josh's mom, Matthew's dad, Alexandra's mom, and Scarlett's mom. Thank you!!

Thank you for bringing in your paper copies of your SK child's baby photo for the Graduation Ceremony. Maya's mom will be busy creating a DVD for our Graduation Ceremony with the photos from this year. Your photos will be returned. Thank you so much Mrs. Fuller for taking the time to do this!

Warm regards,

Mrs. Tyndall

Thursday, May 19

Hello Parents,

This week your child's tomato plants are going home! It is safe to plant them in the garden or in a pot. Tomato plants like fertilizer and lots of water and sunshine. They will also need to be supported as they grow taller and need about 20 cm of space around them. Good luck!

Thank you to all the parents who submitted their pizza forms. The Kindergarten Pizza Lunch on the Lawn is a treat at the end of the year and it is an opportunity for your child to feel like a big kid (Grades 1-8 participate in Pizza Lunches throughout the year). Forms and money are due to me by June 1.

Thank you to our parent volunteers - Reading CLub was Maya's mom and Hana's mom, the Mystery Readers were Sarah's sister and Sasha's mom, and the bags and snuggle books were done by Griffin's mom and Lola's mom.

We are continuing to learn about Life Cycles as we watch our chrysalids slowly grow and turn into butterflies. Feel free to drop by to see them.

I have sent some of the SK children's Phonics Duotangs home so that they can catch up and complete Set 3; we are working on Sets 4 and 5.

Next week we will be continuing to review our numbers and I am completing assessments in preparation for Report Cards which go home on June 29th. Both JKs and SKs receive Report Cards.

We also completed writing projects in our journals about Springfest and about wishes. Please continue to encourage your children to sound out words.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Mrs. Tyndall

Friday, May 13

Dear families,

Thank you to all the parents who contributed to our Tombolas for Springfest. Our class was one of the top contributors and each child received a ring pop. Way to go!

Thank you for remembering to bring in your Pizza money (for Lunch-on-the-Lawn June 29) and forms, as well as $15.00 for the Graduation T-shirt (SKs only), and $10.00 for the Artist coming May 30th.

Aside from our usual Phonics Duotang and Journal work, the children have been working on a fish tank art project and made caterpillars. Our real Painted Lady caterpillar larvae have changed into chrysalids and the children helped me transfer them to their new home where they will develop into butterflies.

Thank you to this week's Parent Volunteers: Siri's mom and Charlie's mom were Mystery Readers, Reading Club was done by Griffin's mom and Jamie's mom, and white bags and snuggle books were done by Jamie's mom and Charlie's mom. Thank you!

The children behaved very well during our surprise Fire Drill. Well done!

As the weather gets warmer please remember to put sunscreen on your children and to provide them with hats for outdoor play.

If your child is in SK, please email a baby photograph of your child to Maya's mom Julia Fuller so that she can include it in the Graduation Ceremony. Thank you!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday, May 6

Dear Families,

First of all, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Mother's Day on Sunday. The children worked very hard to make special cards for you. They did a wonderful job!

I would also like to thank all the families that have contributed to the Tombolas for Springfest! We have earned 52 leaves so far! Wow! Next week is the last week to contribute. Thank you!

Thank you as well to the families to brought in a loonie or twoonie for "Get Loud" Friday to support the hearing impaired.

This week we continued to work on our Phonics duotangs and I am happy to say that many SK children are on Set Four! We are now learning about the blended sound "ai" as in "rain", "snail", etc. and we will be learning the sounds "or", "ou", "j", "ie", and "ee" next.

We also reviewed our written numbers 1-31 and completed our May calendar. We reviewed 1-100 orally and the children had fun calling them out from our chart. If your child is writing at home, please remind them to always start at the top when forming letters or numbers.

When your child has completed a set of phonics sheets (that we work on in class) I check them and send the sheets home for you to review. The children work carefully on them and I am very impressed with how their writing/colouring/small motor skills have improved!

With their Reading Buddies, the afternoon class drew pictures in response to listening to the Aesop Fable about a fox and a stork. The pictures represented the lesson that we should treat people as we would like to be treated. This activity blended the Kindergarteners and Grade 3s nicely because the Grade 3s are currently studying Fables. The morning class will complete this activity next week with their Reading Buddies.

Our 100 + Painted Lady caterpillars have really grown and soon they will be forming chrysalids. What an exciting addition to our Science Centre! This week William A.'s "mystery bag" item was terrific because it was a small toy caterpillar that turned into a butterfly! Thank you William.

A special thank you goes to Lola's Dad in the morning class for painting the Springfest table that we decorated with our fingerprints. It looks beautiful! Thank you as well to our afternoon grade parents Mrs. Busch and Mrs. DeLonghi, and our mornign grade parents Mrs. Rankin and Mrs. Giancos, for organizing the items for Springfest (as well as all the other help they arrange). The afternoon class decorated a large platter with their fingerprints and it looks lovely!

This week's Reading Clubs were done by Griffin's mom and Jamie's mom, our Mystery Readers were Paige (Sarah's sister) and Sarah's grandmother helped too, and the afternoon Mystery Reader was John's dad. Our white bags and snuggle books were done by David's mom and . Thank you very much as always.

Thank you to the parents who submitted Scholastic Orders for May 1st. Your books should arrive shortly. Our next Scholastic Order is due June 1st.

Pizza lunch-on-the-lawn forms are in your white TDSB bags. Please send them in by Wednesday, June 1st. The Artist-in-the-Classroom money ($10.00 cash or cheque payable to Janeen Brownrigg) is due May 9. Thank you.

I wish all of you a very Happy Mothers' Day and a wonderful weekend.

Mrs. Tyndall

Friday, April 29

Dear families,

Our butterfly larvae have arrived! We are learning about how caterpillars change into butterflies. In about one week our baby caterpillars will attach themselves to their lids and will form a crysalid. These will then be transferred to our large butterfly net. In approxmately one week the crysalids will mature and our Painted Lady Butterflies will emerge! The butterflies will stay in our classroom with special butterfly food for about two weeks, then each class will release them into our school garden!

In this week's white bags you will find an order form for our published books that we have created in the classroom! If you have not purchased one already and would like to, please fill out a form and return it, along with a cheque payable to LKS for 13.00, by Friday, May 6. Thank you.

Last week we planted our tomato seeds and learned about germination. The seeds have germinated and are growing well. At the end of May they should be ready for planting in your gardens or in planters.

We are continuing to practice writing sentences with "finger spaces" between each word. The children completed the sentence "In the Spring..." on a cut-out flower. Well done! Their reading a writing is really coming along! We also reviewed letter formation and the children have really improved in this area. Our next unit will be on Money.

Please save any cardboard egg cartons so that we can make caterpillars out of them. Thank you!

Thank you very much to our Parent Volunteers over the last two weeks: Reading Club was Maya's mom and David's mom, our Mystery Readers were Maya's dad, Spencer's brother Eddie, and Adam's mom. The white bags and Snuggle Books were done by Siri's mom, Griffin's mom, Sydney's mom, and Alexandra's mom. Thank you so much!

For the Sharing Assembly we performed our Popcorn Song, which is a song with high frequency words.

Please remember to return your white bags each Monday. Also, the Scholastic orders are due on Monday (May 2nd).

An Artist is coming to the Kindergarten Classrooms! Our day will be May 30. The cost will be 10.00 cash per child, including materials. More information to follow.

From our Principal's Blog:
"Just a quick reminder that if your child will not be here in September, to please inform your class teacher and the office. The information is very important as we continue with our planning. As we head into the last two months of school, we will also be completing student placements. As in previous years, staff work together in teams to place the students in classes for the following September. Gender, academic achievement, social needs, and ministry caps are among the list of things that we consider when placing children. The goal of student placements is to have 'balanced' classes. As most of you know, we do not take 'teacher' requests from parents and we ask that you honour this part of the process. By the end of the year, teachers have a good understanding of their students and place the children accordingly. In most cases, staffing hasn't fully been completed until the end of the year, and as most of you know, changes happen all the way into September. We thank you in advance."

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.

Friday, April 15

Dear Families,

Spring has officially Sprung in Room 166! This week we planted our tomato seeds and put hydrating beads in the soil to keep it moist. The children also brought in their hollowed-out eggs and we will be dipping them next week. We also made daffodils in class and read Eric Carle's "The Tiny Seed".

Our Book Project is coming along. The children are each completing four pieces of work which will be included in the book. Please remember to send in your order (blue form) if you would like a copy.

In this week's white bag are the compound words "bow, pants, cloud, hat coat and boots" that go with the word "rain."

Thank you to our Parent Volunteers this week: Reading Club was Tate's mom and Tatum's mom, the Mystery Readers were David's mom and Cole's mom, and the Bags and Snuggle Books were completed by Jamie's mom and Charlie's mom. Thank you so much!

Aside from Easter and Spring-related activities we are starting our unit on People in the Community.

Next Thursday is Wear Green to School Day to celebrate Earth Week.

Thank you to Lola, Daniel, Siri and Koby who brought in their Earth Day items made from recycled materials. You did a wonderful job! Please remember to bring in your items by next week.

I have ordered a kit of cocoons/larvae so the children can observe them grow and turn into butterflies! They will arrive in late April.

Thank you for your Scholastic Orders! The next order is due May 1st.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday, April 8

Hello parents,

As we prepare for Earth Week next week, please help your child make an item out of recyled materials to show to the class. It could be a robot, a house, a car, etc. but it must be made out of recycled materials. Thank you!

This week's memory words are "pink, yellow, purple, fun. eggs, bunny, look, paint, hide, church, and chocolate."

Thank you to the following Parent Volunteers: Reading Club was Siri's mom and Griffin's mom, Mystery Reader (a.m.) was Koby's mom, bags and books were done by Alexandra's mom and Charlie's mom, and Play-Doh was made by David's mom. Thank you also to Koby's mom for providing craft items!

We continued work on our Phonics books and we are almost finished Set Three. Good work!

In this week's p.m. bags you will find Earth Day Memory Cards that your child completed. They can play Memory with them at home. The Morning Class will finish these shortly.

We are making a book! Please complete the blue form in this week's white bag if you are interested in this project.

Next month's Scholastic orders are due May 1st.

Next week we will plant tomato seeds and paint easter eggs along with other Spring/Easter-related activities.

Have a great weekend!

Friday, April 1

Happy April everyone! Thank you to those of you who attended the Sharing Assembly on Monday, and congratulations to the children who received awards for "Honesty."

April will be a busy month as we celebrate the arrival of Spring, Easter and Earth Week. I have prepared a number of literacy- and numeracy-based activities related to these themes.

This week we worked on improving letter and number formation by tracing and by writing letters and numbers on their own. I have seen a real improvement over the year! Well done!

This week's "refridgerator words" are "on" and "and."

Thank to to our Parent Volunteers this week: Tatum's mom and Tate's mom did Reading Club, the Mystery Readers were Siri's mom and Griffin's mom, and TDSB bags and snuggle books were done by Koby's mom and Charlie's mom.

The afternoon class started making Earth Day memory cards with their Reading Buddies and will finish and play with them next week.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Friday, March 25, 2011

Friday, March 25

This week in Room 166 the children worked on their numeracy skills by playing a dice game and by learning to identify numbers of dots in different formats i.e. 6 dots in a row is the same as 2 dots plus 2 dots plus 2 dots, 5 dots plus one dot, 4 dots plus 2 dots, and 3 dots plus 3 dots. They then completed worksheets to reinforce this concept. We also practiced our "popcorn words" and wrote them out on our "popcorn bag", remembering to use finger spaces between the words. We are also learning Spring Vocabulary and the compound words with "rain."

We are now on Set Three of Jolly Phonics and Set Two has been sent home. Great work!

Our Sharing Assembly will be on Monday and we will be performing a very short skit about St. Patrick's Day and singing a song about the rain. All are invited to attend.

Please remember that Scholastic Orders are due April 1st. Thank you.

The children met with their Reading Buddies and completed Easter colouring pages together after reading books together.

Today was a very special day for the kids thanks to our visit from Firefighter Captain Ron Jones. Ron taught the children about safety in and outside the home and the children listened attentively to his lessons. Great job, and thank you Firefighter Ron!

This week's "refridgerator door words" (on the red strip of paper) are "come, look, here". Please practice these words at home.

Finally, thank you to our Parent Volunteers this week: Reading Club was done by David's mom and Hana's mom, our Mystery Reader was Alexandra's mom, and the morning class white bags and snuggle books were prepared by Jamie's mom. Your help is always appreciated.

Have a nice weekend,

Mrs. Tyndall

Saturday, March 12

Hello families,

Another busy week in Room 166 has flown by. We have started practicing our Popcorn (high frequency) words and I have sent home some ideas of how to practice them at home as well. The red strip of paper with this week's 3 words could be "refridgerator" words i.e. they go on the fridge for a week and when your child opens the door they could read the words (sort of like "open sesame" to open the door!).

We have been preparing for our next sharing assembly which is March 28. The TDSB Character Trait for this month is Honesty. At this assembly we will be singing a song about the rain and reading a poem about St. Patrick's Day. The children had fun colouring our big rainbow and making the coins for our pot of gold. Cole and Spencer have volunteered to be our leprechauns. Thank you!

We completed booklets about St.Patrick's Day Symbols with our Reading Buddies and the children had fun drawing and colouring the booklets as well as reading the books they took from our Library. The children also made shamrocks.

We reviewed and practiced writing our numbers 1-20 this week as well. If your SK child's Phonics duotang was sent home, please return it when set two is completed. We are now on Set Three.

Thank you very much to this week's Parent Volunteers: Maya's mom and Tatum's mom did Reading Club, our Mystery Readers were Jamie's mom and Myles' mom, and Charlie's mom did the white bags. I didn't send home Snuggle Books over the break.

Please note that there was an error in the Parent Rep letter: on March 25 both morning and afternoon classes will have a visit from Firefighter Ron Jones, not just the a.m. class as posted. After the March Break we will be doing a unit on Safety to prepare for his visit.

The children are starting to learn how to read and write their last names which is a new step! I am impressed with how well the children are reading now and how well they are sounding out and blending words. We completed the letter-sound "U" which corresponds to the motion of opening an umbrella.

I wish everyone a fun and safe March Break!

Mrs. Tyndall

Sunday, March 6, 2011

Sunday, March 6

Dear families,

This week we started practicing our "popcorn words" which are words that pop up frequently (high frequency words) and that are important to recognize. We are learning to identify, read, and sing them to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb":

like in to no am a that
can me yes
I of the
said we he is was go see and
it big my-y went

I will send home a copy of this "popcorn song" for the children to practice at home! We will be doing a lot more activities with these important words.

This week we completed a fun "scratch art" activity, in which the children coloured both sides of a piece of card stock completely with various crayon colours, then painted a layer of black paint on top. The next day, they scratched words and designs into the surface, "magically" revealing the colours underneath!

We also completed "counting snowballs" number-writing activities, in which the children practiced writing their numbers 1-20. Some JKs are still reversing some of their numbers (2,3,7 and 6 are common) but they are improving which is terrific!

A scholastic order went home this Friday and one more set of order forms will go home Friday, March 11. Please return your orders by April 1st. With the bonus coupons I received from Scholastic I was able to purchase a very nice cash register through the Teacher's Rewards Catalogue. The cash register will go in the Home Centre in the Spring when we start our unit on Money! I also purchased some good quality Canadian play money. Thank you very much for your orders!

This week the JKs also did pattern matching work and sequencing work (a melting snowman), and the SKs continued working on their Phonics duotangs. I sent them home this weekend -- please ask your child to complete their few remaining pages so that we can have them all complete by the end of the week and can start our new series of sounds.

Thank you very much to our Parent Volunteers of this week: Tate's mom was a Mystery Reader, and Siri's mom and Charlie's mom did our white TDSB bags and snuggle books. Thank you!

As you know, there were three cases of head lice in the class last week, as well as in some other classrooms. The children have since returned to school with no further concerns. However, please be sure to check your children for the next week or two and to not share hats. Thank you.

That's our news for now. This week we will be doing some fun numeracy- and literacy-based St. Patrick's Day activities as well as learning the popcorn words.

If you are planning to be absent from school before or after the March Break please be sure to let the office know. Many families plan to take an early or late March Break and it helps Mrs. Sheppard in the office if she knows the reason for a child's absence.

Thank you!

Mrs. Tyndall

Friday, February 25

Hello families

This week the children completed winter-themed activity sheets and prepared for our Sharing Assembly by practising the poem "Five Little Snowmen". They did an excellent job at the assembly! We are also working on the letter sound "O" and on correctly writing our numbers 1-20.

Thank you very much to the parent volunteers who helped us this week: Cole's mom and David's mom helped with Reading Club, our Mystery Readers were Sarah's grandmother and Daniel's dad, and bag help and snuggle books were done by Alexandra's mom and Griffin's mom. Thank you so much.

The afternoon class had a wonderful time skating on Thursday! Thank you to all my parents who helped with laces. The kids had a great time!

I am sending the SK phonics books home this weekend so that the children can complete some pages at home.

Please let the office know if your child will be missing school for any length of time (i.e. extended March Break). I can send your child home with his/her daily journal to write in during their holiday which they can share with the class when they return!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. Tyndall

Dear families,

This week we celebrated Valentines day and completed several numeracy- and literacy-based worksheets related to this day. We learned valentine-related vocabulary, we talked about, wrote and drew things that are red, matched rhyming words, completed a numbers sheet with blank hearts to fill in, and completed the sentence "I love you when..." with written words and a matching picture. The children did an excellent job with this and it is on display on the bulletin board outside our classroom. The morning class also had fun completing their 100th Day booklets with their Reading Buddies. The afternoon class made valentines for their Reading Buddies. Please encourage your child to talk about the work s/he has done in class. They are proud of their work!

Thank you so much to this week's parent volunteers: Lola's mom did Reading Club, Jamie's mom and Jacqueline's mom did the white TDSB bags and Snuggle Books, and Nico's mom was our Mystery Reader. Your help is always appreciated! Thank you also to the parents who brought in tasty treats, juices etc. for our Valentine's Party! The children enjoyed sorting their valentines in their friends' bags. And thank you for the chocolates and treats for Mrs. Tyndall! Yum!

I have still not received all the permission forms for our Skating Party -- please send them in by Tuesday! The children must have written permission in order to participate in this event.

Exciting news! I have booked Firefighter Ron Jones to come to our classroom and speak to the children about fire safety. He will be visiting our morning and afternoon classes on March 25.

I have enjoyed meeting with parents regarding their child's progress, whether it was at our two Open Houses on Tuesday and Wednesday evening, or during a scheduled interview this week.

Take care and have a wonderful Family Day weekend!

Hello families,

It was a busy week in room 166 as we celebrated the 100th day of school on Thursday. The children counted several items they brought in, made banners and bracelets, and completed counting and colouring pages. A special thank you to our parents who helped the children compile and sort 100 items - they are on display outside the classroom on our bulletin board. Our reading buddies helped the children make a booklet called "100 Ways to Celebrate" and it should be finished by this week. Thank you to Scarlett's mom for bringing in fruit and to Victoria's mom who brought in a cake (made by Victoria!) with 100 candles! Thank you also to Sydney's mom for the delicious cupcakes.

In this week's white TDSB bags you received a permission form for our skating event. Please return it by Monday or by the end of the week at the latest. If you do not have skates or a helmet, a good place to purchase used and new skates is Newsons, which is at the south west corner of Jane and Dundas, beside the library. They also exchange skates.

Thank you to our parent volunteers this week; our Mystery Readers were Alexandra's dad and Victoria's mom, and the white bags and snuggle books were done by Alexandra's mom and Jacqueline's mom. Thank you so much!

On Monday we will have a Valentine's Day Party which the children are very excited about. Thank you to the parents/children who have already brought in their cards/treats. The children had fun reading their classmates' names and sorting the cards in the valentine bags that will go home on Monday after the party. Thank you to the parents who are bringing in fruit, juice boxes etc.

We have started the Jolly Phonics letter sound "G" and are on our third series of sounds. I have seen enormous improvement and learning in the classroom and a lot of children are starting to blend sounds and read now which is wonderful! Congratulations to Spencer who read a book to us the other day. Way to go! I am also impressed with the effort the children put forth on their worksheets. We do worksheets every day after our morning message/circle time in order to reinforce the numeracy/literacy activities we are learning, and the children always do their best. Great job!

I am looking forward to meeting with parents this week to discuss their child's progress and to show them the great work they are doing in class.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tyndall

Hello families

This week we celebrated Groundhog Day by completing several literacy activities as well as Chinese New Year on February 3. The JKs also finished their "In the Snow" booklets, JKs and SKs worked on their phonics duotangs (almost finished the second set!) and all the children completed snowball names.

The Morning Class met with their Reading Buddies again and started their "Teddy is Ready" booklets.

Next week I will be sending home TDSB permission forms to participate in our Skating Days - please note that the afternoon date has been changed from February 25 to February 24 (our Sharing Assemblies are on the 25th). Permission forms must be completed in order for your child to participate and are due back on Monday, February 14.

Thursday February 10 is the 100th day of school. Please remember to help your child compile 100 small items and bring them to class on February 9th. Lots of fun numeracy activities are planned for that day!

If you will be bringing in treats for the children on Valentines Day please ensure they are nut free.

Thank you to our parent volunteers this week: Our Mystery Readers were Ava's Dad and Tierney's mom; the children had Reading Club help from Maya's mom, and Charlie's mom and William S.'s mom did the white bags. Thank you!

Some children are still arriving to school without indoor shoes -- please ensure they have them in their cubbies by Monday. Children are not permitted to not wear shoes/boots in school; if there is a fire drill they must have footwear. If they do not have indoor shoes, the children wear their boots in class which is not as comfortable and it is harder for them to sit in circle time. Thank you and have a nice weekend!

Hello families

The children have been working hard at completing their Set Two Phonics booklets/duotangs and I will send them home when they are complete. I have compiled practice sheets from various programs including Jolly Phonics to reinforce letter sound knowledge and writing skills.

Our morning class was excited to meet their new Reading Buddies from Ms. Shklar's class. This week they will make a book together call "Teddy is Ready" that they can read to each other. The book is about winter clothing and colours.

Cold winter days are here for another few months and the children have been enjoying their time outside using the sleds and shovels. Please label your child's clothing since with so many items in the coat room it is easy to misplace things.

The children have also been practicing their cutting and pasting skills (small motor) by making snowman posters. The JKs also made a little book called "In the Snow" which they can practice reading to you at home. The SKs have been learning rhyming words and made a snowman of words rhyming with "it" and "at". They have also been writing compound words with "snow": snowman, snowball, snowflake, snowsuit, snowstorm, etc. A sure sign that winter is here! :)

This week we went to an assembly to hear a wonderful performance by Storyteller Cheryl Thorton. Our SKs remembered Cheryl from last year! The children listened intently as she told several stories from around the world, and back in class they drew a picture of their favourite story and wrote a caption to go along with it. They are on display on our hall bulletin boards.

In this week's white TDSB bags I sent home a copy of the Snack and Mystery Bag Schedules from March until June. Your child's birthday will coincide with his/her special/snack day. If your child's birthday is in the summer months s/he will celebrate their Special Day in June (see schedule). Please remember that all treats must be labelled nut-free.

In math, we are continuing graphing and sorting activities and the concepts of "most" and "least". We are also continuing to learn new high frequency words, for example "and", "the", "said", "to", "we",|"of","she", "he", "my" , "today", "is", and "day".

Thank you as always to those parents who volunteered in the classroom this week: Maya's brother Jonah was Mystery Reader, Scarlett's mom was also Mystery Reader, and Jamie's mom helped with the white bags and snuggle books.

Permission forms for our skating parties (a.m. Feb 28, p.m. Feb 24) will go home soon. Please remember that the children do require CSA-approved helmets and skates to go on the ice. The children will walk to the rink after attendance and then return to the classroom for the remainder of the day (and then have hot chocolate!).

Thank you as well to parents who attended our Sharing Assembly. The children recited the poem "Snow".

The next Scholastic Order is due February 1.

February 10th is the 100th day of school! I have sent home an information sheet regarding a project your child should complete by February 9 with 100 small objects. Please encourage your children to count their items in tens as well as in single digits.

We will have a Valentine's Party on February 14th. Children can bring in Valentines for each member of their class and we will sort them together. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to practice writing at home. If you don't have a class list please let me know. Please remember that in the afternoon class we have two new students: Daniel Burbach and Hana Zong. If you would like to provide treats/drink boxes for that day please let your grade parents know.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Parents

This week we continued with our numbers and Phonics books, and have completed the second set of phonics: C/K, E, H, R, M, and D. Please review the gestures and sounds of these letters at home (a sheet was included in this week's white TDSB bag). The children also started making books called "Teddy is Ready" with their Reading Buddies. The 100th Day of School is fast approaching and we will be doing many fun activities that day. An information sheet regarding this special day will go home next week.

I have booked the Lambton Skating Rink and will send home an information sheet regarding this fun event as well. The morning class is booked on February 28 from 9:15-10:15 a.m., and the afternoon class is booked on February 25 from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Parent volunteers are welcome and your assistance in tying laces would be great. I will make a big pot of hot chocolate for after the party. Please remember that the children are required to wear CSA-approved hockey helmets.

I have completed the Snack and Mystery Bag schedule until the end of the year and will send it to you via email. I will send home a paper copy in you child's Friday white TDSB. Please remind your children to return the bag as well as the green Library bag.

The Junior Kindergarten students will be receiving a Summary Report on Monday, February 14. The Senior Kindergarten students will not be receiving a report this term. Friday, February 18 is a PA Day for Parent-Teacher interviews. I will be requesting interviews to address the progress and needs of specific students. All students will receive a report card in June.

Have a wonderful week - more updates to follow soon!

Hello Parents

Another winter week has flown by and the children have been busy learning winter words and continuing with their literacy and numeracy activities.

Both JKs and SKs have been working together on writing the numbers 1-20 correctly with no reversals, the letter sounds R and H, winter vocabulary, and colours. They were also authors of a booklet called "A Penguin Adventure." The JKs have been working on sequencing (putting pictures in the correct order as they would happen) as well as learning how to identify and read the names of colours. The SKs have also completed booklets called "A Made a Frosty Snowman" (which they should practice reading at home), a picture/writing worksheet about what they like/don't like about winter, and a book about mittens. We have also been practicing our poem "Snow" which we will present at the next Sharing Assembly (January 28). The Character Trait for that assembly is "Teamwork." All the children have also finished artwork which is on display on our bulletin boards. The children drew a winter scene, then created the snowstorm effect using marbles in white paint. They look wonderful!

A reminder that children need to wear indoor shoes at school. Crocs or slippers are fine. The floors in the cubby room get wet from the boots etc. and the children need footwear to change into in order to stay comfortable.

Please remember to bring your child's white TDSB bag back every Monday (it goes home on Fridays). All correspondance from school goes in this bag, as well as our weekly Snuggle Reading books. Please also remember to return the Snuggle Books by Friday at the latest.

I am pleased to see that most of the children can dress themselves in their winter clothing and can do up their zippers without assistance. Thank you for your help by encouraging your children to learn to dress independently.

Thank you to our Parent Volunteers this week: Jamie's dad and Tierney's mom were Mystery readers, Maya's mom and Tatum's mom did Reading Club, Spencer's mom and Sydney's mom did the white bags. Thank you so much!

I will be absent on Thursday, January 20, completing the Early Development Instrument questionnaires for our Senior Kindergarten Students. A letter was sent home regarding this project. A supply teacher will teach the children on that day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sunday, January 9

Hello parents and Happy New Year!

This has been a busy week as we returned to school and to our regular classroom activities and routines. The children have been reviewing their letter sound "R" and their numbers and they have been working hard at sounding out words and writing phonetically as well as using high frequency words. I am very impressed with how much the children are learning (both reading and writing, as well as numeracy activities) and with their excellent efforts and participation during our lessons and classroom discussions/sharing time. What wonderful students!

Our morning class will start Reading Buddies next week with Mrs. Shklar's Grade Three class! We will meet with the Grade 3s weekly and this is always a very rewarding program for the older and younger children alike. Our afternoon class will continue meeting once a week with their Reading Buddies from Mrs. Zappi's class.

Thank you very much to all the parents who brought in their Christmas cards - we will use them next year around holiday time to make new Christmas cards and crafts! Thank you as always to our wonderful Grade Parents Melissa Busch, Kim DeLonghi, Anne Rankin and Vicky Giancos who work so diligently on our volunteer schedules.

Welcome to our new student Daniel and his family! Daniel is in our afternoon class. Farewell to Declan (p.m.) whose family moved to Calgary. We will miss him.

Each week in Friday's white TDSB bag several of your child's work sheets go home for you to see. I do retain work as well for reporting/parent interview purposes, and the children do continue their journals and phonics booklets in class.

This week's poem is called "Snow, Snow" and the children can practice reciting the poem with gestures at home.

Please note our upcoming January/February activities posted to the right of this blog. We will be doing several fun and educational activities on Thursday, February 10. I would like each child to bring in 100 items for our display table and to show to their classmates. These should be small items and the children should count them in groups of ten before putting them in a (preferably clear) container. More information to follow as 100th Day approaches.

Thank you,

Mrs. Tyndall
